Il 14 febbraio 2013, Oscar Pistorius uccise la sua fidanzata, Reeva Steenkamp, con quattro colpi di pistola in una villa di Pretoria, in Sudafrica. L'atleta paralimpico è stato condannato a 13 anni e 5 mesi per omicidio. Secondo il suo ex-manager, Peet Van Zyl, a fine mese o in marzo, Pistorius potrebbe uscire dal carcere, ma dipende da vari fattori e pareri. Lo riferisce Repubblica. Tuttavia, c'è forte opposizione da parte di diverse organizzazioni che si oppongono alla sua liberazione. Van Zyl ha dichiarato che una condizione essenziale per la liberazione era che Pistorius incontrasse i genitori di Reeva Steenkamp. In giugno, ha incontrato solo il padre, mentre la madre non ha voluto incontrarlo. Pistorius vorrebbe venire in Italia, dove si è sempre trovato bene e dove c'è la base di allenamento del suo ex-manager. Tuttavia, non è ancora chiaro se gli verrà concesso il passaporto. Van Zyl ha raccontato che l'ultima volta che ha visitato Pistorius in carcere, aveva strani segni sul corpo e che avrebbe avvisato i medici.
