Former Berlusconi MP gets 5-yr jail sentence for mafia links


(ANSA) - Reggio Calabria, July 18 - An appeals court in the
southern city of Reggio Calabria on Wednesday sentenced former
Berlusconi MP Amedeo Matacena to five years in prison on charges
of association with organized crime.
Matacena was arrested in 2004 for seeking to intimidate a
judicial body through violence or threats of violence and
associating with the Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta mafia.
He was an MP for former premier Silvio Berlusconi's Forza
Italia party, which later became the People of Freedom (PdL)
Matacena was acquitted two years ago by the same appeals
court, however state prosecutor Francesco Scuderi appealed the
Italy's Supreme Court accepted the appeal and reassigned
the case to another tribunal.
Matacena was also accused of having sought the electoral
support of the Rosmini crime family, and he was spotted at
events that suggested he had ties with organized crime, like the
marriage of one of the sons of the Sinopoli syndicate's boss,
Carmine Alvaro.
