Italian students to pay up to double tuition if behind


(ANSA) - Rome, July 27 - Italian university students falling
behind in their coursework will pay up to double their tuition
fees, according to an amendment to the government spending
The amendment, which was approved by the Senate budget
committee Friday, would be applied most heavily to students from
wealthier families.
Students with familiy incomes lower than 90,000 euros would
pay a 25% tuition penalty.
The measure is part of the government's hotly contested
plans to save 26 billion euros over the next three years after
conducting a review of public spending.
