Italy should give recognition to gay couples, says Bersani

(ANSA) - Rome, July 31 - It's time that Italy give legal
recognition to gay couples, Pier Luigi Bersani, head of the
centre-left Democratic Party, said Tuesday.
And he promised to push that agenda forward.
"We will give substance to the principle of law recognized
by the Constitutional Court for which a gay couple has the right
to live their marriage by receiving legal recognition".
In March, Italy's Supreme Court rejected the appeal of a
gay couple, wed abroad, for legal recognition in Italy.
However, the court also said that the two men had the
"right to a family life".
Supporters of gay marriage read that as a call for Italy to
legally recognize gay marriage.
The ruling said current law made it illegal to recognize
gay marriage in Italy, but the "social context in Europe had
changed significantly".
Bersani's comments came just days after Milan's city
council approved a measure to recognize the common-law unions of
unmarried, co-habitating couples.
Gay rights organizations cheered the Milan measure for
effectively recognizing the legitimacy of gay couples, and as a
step toward granting legal rights and privileges similar to
marriage to homosexual couples.
The measure establishes a registry of "civil unions" on
city records for "two people linked by emotional bonds".
