Hiroshima 'a reminder of war's destruction' says Napolitano

(ANSA) - Rome, August 6 - An important lesson from the the
nuclear bomb explosion at Hiroshima is the destructive power of
war, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said Monday.
"(Through Hiroshima) we remember that knowledge of the
destruction wrought by war must be preserved. It is a worthwhile
warning to the younger generations that did not live" through
the Second World War period, said Napolitano.
He spoke on the 67th anniversary of the United States'
bombing of the Japanese city, the first time a nuclear weapon
had been used in warfare.
Three days after the August 6, 1945 bombing, the US dropped
a nuclear bomb on the city of Nagasaki.
These attacks helped to end the war in the Pacific but also
caused horrific damage.
Napolitano's remarks came in a letter to Athos De Luca,
whose "Land and Peace" group organized the memorial of the
bombing of Hiroshima.
Napolitano praised the "meritorious initiative" and added
that nuclear capabilities remain a dangerous force in the world,
including in areas that are tense and unstable.
He also joined in commemorating the losses Japan recently
suffered following last year's major earthquake there.
"I also join you in remembering the recent sufferings
caused to the Japanese people from the terrible earthquake of
March 2011, from which Japan has recovered with an admirable
tenacity and dignity".
The bombing of Hiroshima also reminds the world of the
value of peace, said the vice president of the Senate, Vannino
"We must never cease to defend the values that are the
basic building blocks of the road to democracy and peace for the
whole human community".
