Olympics: Campriani wins Italy's 7th gold

(ANSA) - London, August 6 - Marksman Niccolo' Campriani won
Italy's seventh gold medal at the London Olympics on Monday when
he triumphed in the men's 50-metre rifle 3 positions event.
It is his second medal at the Games after the 24-year-old
Florence native took silver in the 10-meter air rifle event a
week ago.
Campriani also set a new Olympics record as he outshot
second-placed South Korean Kim Jong-hyun by six full points.
Placing third to win the bronze was Matthew Emmons of the
United States, a longtime rival and training partner of the
young Italian gold medalist.
Campriani first won fame by making the Italian national
team to compete in the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics Games when
he was only 20 years old.
However, more seasoned veterans outgunned him there,
rattling his confidence and forcing Campriani to work even
harder at his sport.
In May of this year, he was back on track, winning gold at
the shooting World Cup in Milan in the 10-meter air-rifle event
Campriani credits psychologist Edward Etzel - himself a
former archery champion at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles -
for helping him improve his athletic focus.
The shooter, who studied engineering and trained at West
Virginia University in the United States after earning a
scholarship there, has said that he intends to remain in Britain
after the Olympics.
He plans to work towards a Masters degree at the University
of Sheffield, where he said he hopes to also continue his
athletic training.
