Berlusconi's party opens to new pact with Northern League


(ANSA) - Rome, August 9 - Angelino Alfano, the secretary of
ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom party, said on
Thursday that the centre-right group may forge a new alliance
with the devolutionist Northern League in next year's elections.
Alfano said on Rai television he believed the "conditions
for an alliance with the Northern League" existed.
"It would be a mistake for the differences between the
League and the Pdl party to lead to a centre-left victory in the
north, not least because we are talking about a left wing
movement that has serious anti-business prejudices," he added.
The PdL and the League were government allies until
Berlusconi was forced to resign in November and make way for
Premier Mario Monti's emergency administration of technocrats.
But they split when the PdL decided to back Monti's
government, while the League became its staunchest critics.
Alfano added that the PdL were urging Berlusconi to drop
any doubts he had about running for a fifth term as premier next

Political analysts have said the Pdl party would not be
able to achieve victory next year without the support of the
populist Northern League party, which has been hit by a party
funding scandal.
