Rome blaze quashed after three killed in wave of fires


(ANSA) - Rome, August 9 - Rome's Monte Mario residential
area was ravaged by a new blaze on Thursday before firefighters
managed to put it out, only a day after three people died in a
wave of fires that has struck during a heat wave in Italy.
The Monte Mario area, located in the northern part of Rome,
has experienced several similar devastating episodes in recent
Thursday's fire had developed close to the Villa Madama
complex, where Italian premiers often host meetings with
international dignitaries.
The local civil protection unit managed to put out the
Monte Mario flames before they took hold on a nearby woody area
where a well-known religious statue of the Virgin Mary is
The statue overlooks Rome's Stadio Olimpico, the home of
Serie A soccer clubs AS Roma and Lazio.
Prosecutors are probing previous fires in the area after
the national forest guards flagged they had been ignited on
On Tuesday the capital suffered 60 fires, whilst the rest
of the nation was ravaged by 158, according to data from the
national forest guards.
The hardest hit was the region of Campania and the region
of Lazio, where Rome is situated, with 50 and 23 incidents
The region of Puglia suffered 13 fires, Sicily and Tuscany
12, Calabria 11.
