(ANSA) - London, August 13 - The head of the Italian Olympic
Committee, Gianni Petrucci, has expressed satisfaction after
Italy finished eighth in London Olympics medals table.
Italy won eight gold medals, nine silvers and 11 bronzes
for an overall total of 28, one more than the team achieved in
Beijing in 2008 and well over the minimum target Petrucci set of
25.
"We are in the G8 of sport," Petrucci said. "I'd spoken of
a minimum threashold of 25 and we beat that so I can only be
satisfied".
Carlo Molfetta won Italy's eighth gold on Saturday when he
staged a late comeback to prevail in +80kg taekwondo.
Marksman Niccolo' Campriani won the men's 50-metre rifle 3
positions event last week after taking silver in the 10-meter
air rifle.
The Azzurri took their sixth gold at the end of the first
week of London 2012 when their fencers quartet triumphed in the
men's team foil.
Andrea Baldini, Andrea Cassara', Valerio Aspromonte and
Giorgio Avola beat Japan 45-39 in the final, which also left
Italy top of the fencing standings at the London Games.
Elisa Di Francisca, Arianna Errigo, Valentina Vezzali and
Ilaria Salvatori also won gold in the women's foil after Di
Francisca came top of an all-Italian podium in the individual
event.
Shooter Jessica Rossi claimed Italy's fifth gold overall
when she won the women's trap with a world record score, hitting
99 out of 100 targets.
The Azzurri also struck gold with Daniele Molmenti, who
triumphed in the K1 kayak canoe slalom event, and with the men's
archery team of Michele Frangilli, Marco Galiazzo and Mauro
Nespoli.
