'Desert Colossus' to bring record temperatures to Europe

(ANSA) - Rome, August 16 - Another heat wave, the seventh,
is about to hit Europe, sending temperatures to new record
According to, the "Desert Colossus", will
strike Europe between August 18 and 21, sending temperatures up
to a sweltering 40 degrees celsius or higher in France and Spain
and reaching as far north as Lapland.
In Italy the regions most likely to feel scorching heat are
Lombardy, Emilia, Tuscany, Lazio and Sardinia.
The successive heat waves of this summer, coming as Italy
is suffering its worst drought in 10 years, have already left
their mark on the country's economy: some one billion euros in
agriculture damage alone.
The upcoming grape harvest is expected to suffer the
steepest decline in volume in a century, though quality will be
high, according to a report published Tuesday by Italian farming
association Coldiretti.
