Govt will not contest ILVA ruling at Constitutional Court

(ANSA) - Rome, August 17 - The government will not go to the
Constitutional Court to contest the decision of a Taranto judge
to partially halt production at the troubled ILVA steelworks,
Puglia Governor Nichi Vendola said Friday.
Vendola made the announcement after a meeting with the
plant chairman and Italy's industry and environment ministers,
going over possible measures to keep the plant open amid
clean-up operations or to close it altogether.
The government and ILVA are embroiled in a fierce legal
standoff with a local court that has ordered the partial closure
of the plant for environmental and health violations over a
number of years.
The company says closure would put the livelihood of the
12,000 people it employs, as well as the jobs of many other
people in the related supply chain, at risk.
Vendola said taking the case to the Constitutional Court
would open "a bitter conflict with the judiciary".
