ILVA steelworks still operating at a 'minimum' says chairman

(ANSA) - Taranto, August 17 - The troubled ILVA steel plant
is continuing production amid ongoing court battles over charges
of pollution and health violations, the chairman announced
Bruno Ferrante said his steelworks, the largest in Europe,
is producing a "minimum" output, "not because of court orders
but because this is what the market (currently) demands".
Ferrante was in meetings Friday with the industry and
environment ministers discussing possible measures to keep the
plant open amid clean-up operations or to close it altogether.
The government and ILVA are embroiled in a fierce legal
standoff with a local court that has ordered the partial closure
of the plant.
The company says closure would put the livelihood of the
12,000 people it employs, as well as the jobs of many other
people in the related supply chain, at risk.
