Naples mayor considers experimental red-light district

(ANSA) - Naples, August 22 - Naples could soon have its own
red light district, modelled on those in Amsterdam, if the mayor
has his way.
"An experimental project" establishing a controlled
neighbourhood for prostitutes is under consideration, Naples
Mayor Luigi de Magistris said during a radio broadcast on La
Zanzara Estate di Radio 24.
Something must be done to deal with the city's increased
levels of prostitution, which is not actually illegal, the mayor
"You have to open a debate and the issue needs to be
addressed secularly."
Amsterdam could "more or less" be a model, added the mayor.
If prostitutes operated from an identified area, "we can
greatly reduce the presence of organized crime, because that
area would be monitored by the police," he said.
Police could also keep a watch out for pimps and anyone
else exploiting sex-trade workers, he added.
The mayor also said Naples needs more private spots where
young couples who can't afford a house or hotel can go "and stay
secluded, see an outdoor movie, and maybe you can buy something
to eat."
Both topics will be debated by the city council.
