Italians drink less coffee at bars

(ANSA) - Rome, August 24 - Italians' espresso consumption
at bars has plummeted as consumer spending patterns suffer the
pinch of the economic crisis, according to trade association
Federazione dei Pubblici Esercizi (Fipe).
The ordering of coffees in cafes, clubs and restaurants has
also declined, according to the group that represents Italian
bars and restaurants in Europe's fourth-largest economy.
The average cost of an espresso is one euro today, up from
80 euro cents previously, after coffee sellers hiked prices by
some 2.7% in June 2012.
Even if the increase was below the inflation rate of 3.3%
experienced in the period, it's unlikely bar owners will further
increase the cost over the one euro psychological barrier,
according to Fipe Chairman Lino Stoppani.
Fipe said a quick espresso at a bar is amongs Italians'
most beloved habits.
