Italian teens in EU top ten for smoking, drinking alcohol


(ANSA) - Rome, August 28 - Italian teens are among the
highest European users of cigarettes and alcohol within their
peer group, according to a new report released Tuesday.
Fully 63% of 16-year-old Italian teens drank alcohol at
least once in the last month, compared with an average of 57%,
according to the survey by ESPAD, the European School Survey
Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs.
The highest levels were reported by teens in the Czech
Republic at 79%, followed by Denmark at 76%, and Germany at 73%.
Italian 16-year-olds also ranked highly in cigarette use,
with 36% who smoked at least once last month compared with the
European average of 28%.
The Czech Republic had the highest smoking rates for
16-year-olds, at 42%, and Bulgaria at 39%, France at 38%.
Countries where teens smoke the least? Albania, at 13% and
Iceland with 10%.
The illegal substance tried most by European youngsters at
least once in their life is cannabis, either hashish or
Italian teens remain among the top ten countries with 21%
having tried cannabis at least once, compared with 17% on
