(ANSA) - Termoli (Campobasso), August 31 - The Italian
government is getting ready to prospect for oil near the Tremiti
Islands, a protected marine reserve off the coast of Molise but
belonging to Puglia, and local officials are up in arms.
Italy's Culture and Environmental Ministries authorized
Dublin-listed oil and gas explorer Petroceltic International PLC

Gargano National Park President Stefano Pecorella and Park
Community President Ersilia Nobile have called a meeting with
Puglia Regional President Nichi Vendola, Foggia Province
President Antonio Pepe, and the mayors of 18 area towns to come
up with a plan of action. The meeting is to be held at 9.30 am
on September 4 at Gargano National Park headquarters in Monte
Sant'Angelo (near Foggia).
In a separate action, Termoli Mayor Antonio Di Brino and
Tremiti Islands Mayor Antonio Fentini have called a September 6
meeting with all the Molise, Abruzzo and Puglia coastal towns as
well as Gargano National Park authorites.
The protest has been ongoing since 2011, when late singer

then Environmental Minister Stefania Prestigiacomo to stop the
oil drills off lower Italy's beautiful Adriatic coast.
