Sulcis coal mine will not close at year's end, ministry says

(ANSA) - Rome, August 31 - A Sardinian coalmine that is at
the centre of a high-profile industrial dispute will not close
as feared on December 31, the economic development ministry said
in a statement on Friday.
The news came at the end of a much-awaited meeting between
Sardinian Regional Governor Ugo Cappellacci, Carbonia-Iglesias
Provincial President Salvatore Cherchi, Development
Undersecretary Claudio De Vincenti and Industry Minister Corrado
The participants also agreed to review a regional plan for
the use of clean-coal technology as part of an integrated
approach to local energy production "to update it and make it
compatible with the best and most economically sustainable
technologies," the ministry said.
Miners working for the Carbosulcis coal company at the
Nuraxi Figus mine in the Sulcis coal basin in southwestern
Sardinia are currently staging a protest 375 meters underground.
They are asking the government to go ahead with plans for
clean-coal technology and CO2 storage which they say would also
give them greater employment security.
