Alcoa aluminum plant dismantling halted

(ANSA) - Rome, September 3 - Hotly disputed work to begin
shutting down parts of the Alcoa aluminum plant on the Italian
island of Sardinia has been halted, said Italy's Ministry for
Economic Development on Monday.
Labor unions and the government have been locked in a
dispute with the American aluminum giant over the company's move
to shut down a smelter and put hundreds of jobs at risk.
Alcoa has promised to keep all workers at its Portovesme
plant employed through the end of the year, but began powering
down the smelter on September 1.
On Friday, a statement from Swiss multinational Glencore
expressed an interest in taking over the plant.
The Ministry and Sardinian officials made the information
available, and Glencore requested another week to examine the
possible deal.
A second meeting has been set up for September 10, the
communique said.
