Farmers' group says Lombardy agriculture 'state of disaster'

(ANSA) - Milan, September 3 - Damage caused by Italy's long
hot summer has created an agricultural state of disaster,
farmers' group Coldiretti said on Monday.
"July and August droughts have impacted crops heavily, both
in terms of quantities produced and expenditure for the fuel
used for irrigation," Lombardy Coldiretti President Hector
Prandini said.
Producers around the cities of Brescia, Milan, Sondrio,
Bergamo, Mantova, Pavia and Cremona have suffered damage
estimated at 200 million euros.
"Irrigation costs doubled for corn and soybeans. There was
a sharp drop in production of almost every crop, milk and
grapes, and increased spending for corn and soybeans used to
feed livestock," Prandini said.
There was also a sharp rise in the cost of energy to cool
barns and sheds.
