Italian car market slumped 20% in August, says Fiat chief


(ANSA) - Turin, September 3 - Sales on the Italian car
market look to have slumped 20% in August, increasing the
problems for the country's auto giant Fiat, CEO Sergio
Marchionne said on Monday.
"It's not a good month in Italy. It is forecast that sales
dropped 20% compared to (the same month in) 2011," Marchionne
told reporters.
"I have never seen a number so low in my life".
Italian car sales also plunged 20% in July, when Marchionne
said that the carmaker may have to close one of its plants in
Italy if weak demand on the European auto market continues.
Fiat temporary laid off workers at Pomigliano plant near
Naples late last month because of weak demand and it is set to
halt production there again from Sept. 24 to Oct. 5 for the same
