Layoff hours have jumped almost 20% so far in 2012 in Italy


(ANSA) - Rome, September 5 - The recession in Italy is
biting hard into workers as authorized hours of layoffs jumped
by almost 20% in the first eight months of this year, the
country's national insurance agency INPS reported Wednesday.
Compared with the same period last year, layoff hours
increase by 18.7%, which translates to about 67 million fewer
hours of work between January and August of 2012 compared with a
year ago.
Making matters worse, INPS reported a jump of 14.8% in the
number of applications for unemployment benefits in the first
seven months of this year, compared with the same period last
It reported that 763,256 Italians applied for benefits
during the period, compared with 664,989 in the first seven
months of 2011.
