'Tension, worry high' says Monti of Alcoa labor dispute


(ANSA) - Rome, September 11 - Italian Premier Mario Monti
remarked on the high tensions surrounding labor relations at the
threatened Sardinian Alcoa aluminum plant in a meeting with
labor leaders on Tuesday.
"We find ourselves in a moment charged with tension and
worry," he said.
The roundtable came a day after hundreds of workers
demonstrated in Rome during talks between government officials,
union leaders and Alcoa representatives.
The demonstration turned violent and 15 people were injured
in clashes between workers and the police.
Talks have been aimed at finding a way to save the
unprofitable Alcoa plant, which is gradually being shut down, by
finding a buyer willing to take it on.
However, Industry Minister Corrado Passera has described
the challenge of keeping the factory open as "almost
