Italian girls want to be nurses, boys engineers, OECD finds


(ANSA) - Paris, September 11 - Young Italian men gravitate
towards technical careers while their female counterparts aspire
to work in healthcare, the Organization for Economic Cooperation
and Development reported Tuesday.
In a study entitled 'Education at a Glance 2012', the OECD
found that among 15-year-olds, 13.1% foresaw a career in
engineering, IT or architecture.
But the number splits along gender lines, with 21.4% of
boys choosing a technical field and only 4.9% of girls doing the
The gender gap reappears at the collegiate level. Despite
the fact that 59% of graduates are women, the number drops to
33% in the fields of engineering and construction.
The imbalance flips in the health and nursing field.
Among 15-year-olds, 15.3% of girls foresaw a career in the
health workforce while only 7.9% of boys did.
At the university level, 69% of all healthcare graduates
are men, the report said.
