Windjet workers protest, block road to Catania airport


(ANSA) - Catania, September 11 - About 100 workers laid off
in August when the Italian low-cost airline Windjet went belly
up protested in front of Catania's Santa Maria Goretti airport
in Sicily on Tuesday, blocking road access for nearly an hour.
Two unemployed flight attendants chained themselves to
railings inside the airport.
The protest came at the end of a meeting organized by CGIL,
CISL and UIL labor unions attended by numerous employees who
lost their jobs and have not yet received compensation.
Italian newspapers reported in August when the carrier
failed that it shouldered a debt of about 140 million euros, and
that it employed as many as 800 people directly.
Thousands of passengers were stranded when the carrier went
under during one of Italy's busiest travel seasons.
