Italian soccer to have new match doctors in wake of Morosini

(ANSA) - Rome, September 20 - Italian soccer is going to
have a new figure called the 'match doctor' to try to prevent
deaths like that of former Italy Under 21 international
Piermario Morosini.
Morosini, 25, died after collapsing while playing for
Livorno in a second-tier match against Pescara in April.
Maurizio Casasco, the president of the Italian Federation
of Sports Medicine, said on Thursday that the new figure will be
independent from the clubs and may be in action as early as
The match doctors will be responsible for all health
measures related to the match, including issues such as access
to emergency exits, he said.
An ambulance trying to reach Morosini after he collapsed
was delayed by over a minute because a parked municipal police
car was blocking access to the field of play.
The three doctors who first assisted Morosini after he
collapsed - Pescara team doctor Ernesto Sabatini, Livorno team
physician Manlio Percellini and emergency medic Vito Molfese -
are being probed for manslaughter.
This does not necessarily mean charges will be presented
against them.
The Italian Federation of Sports Medicine said Thursday
that it had opened an internal inquiry into Morosini's death.
