Senate session suspended after duty speaker no-show

(ANSA) - Rome, September 20 - Thursday's Senate session was
suspended early in the day because there was no duty speaker to
oversee it.
Experts said it was the first time such an incident has
taken place in the history of the Italian Republic.
The Senate Speaker is Renato Schifani of former premier
Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party, but he has
four deputies who also oversee sessions of the Upper House.
On Thursday no one came to oversee proceedings after
Senator Emma Bonino finished her shift in charge.
It emerged that the next duty speaker, Domenico Nania, had
been delayed on his way to the Senate.
