(ANSA) - Rome, September 24 - Premier Mario Monti on Monday
denied press reports that Fiat had requested, or obtained, aid
at a meeting with CEO Sergio Marchionne on Saturday.
"The meeting with the management of Fiat was long and being
as it was not served by official statements or Twitter comments,
I understand that those who had to work on covering it used
their imagination," Monti said. "But no help was requested.
"The government did not commit itself to giving financial
aid to Fiat but it pledge to safeguard Fiat's presence in Italy
and its research resources".
The government called for the weekend meeting after Fiat
said it had revised its plans to invest around 20 billion euros
in Italy in a five-year period because of the crisis of the
European auto market.
Marchionne reiterated that Fiat does not intend to abandon
Italy.
But trade unions and the main centre-left Democratic Party
have said Fiat has not been sufficiently clear about its
investment plans in Italy.
