Italian prison inmates using more exotic illegal drugs

(ANSA) - Rome, September 26 - Illegal drug use remains a
serious concern in Italian prisons, especially as more inmates
turn to exotic synthetic products to get high, says a report
released Wednesday.
As much as 25% of the prison population is using drugs, and
more than 91 operations searching for illegal substances have
been run by Italy's department of prison administrations this
year, according to the Project Man social welfare program of the
Italian Federation of Therapeutic Communities.
Dealers are continually finding ways to smuggle in
old-school substances like amphetamines, and hallucinogens such
as LSD and ecstasy, by hiding them under postage stamps, or on
postcards where they can be released after water is applied.
Visitors smuggle in drugs in their shoes, baby diapers,
processed foods, and even small gas cylinders used to fuel
cooking stoves, said Project Man.
