Berlusconi calls euro a con, rate set was wrong

(ANSA) – Rome, September 27 – Former Italian Prime Minister
Silvio Berlusconi called the single currency a "con", adding it
was wrong to have fixed it at the exchange that had been chosen.
"Making the euro equal to 1,927 lire was suicide,"
Berlusconi said.
Berlusconi added that modern-day Germany was born from the
Weimar Republic, an experience that affected the German economy
and opened the doors to Hitler and Nazism.
"The Bundesbank and (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel have
their roots in the terror of inflation," and because of this the
mandate of the European Central Bank is that of fighting
Berlusconi resigned last November and was replaced by Mario
Monti, who has since been grappling with an ongoing recession
and with Italy’s debt crisis.
