Napolitano says condition of prisons hurts credibility

(ANSA) - Rome, September 27 - The condition of Italy's
prisons damages the country's credibility, President Giorgio
Napolitano said Thursday.
He urged reforms to the legal system to reduce the number
of people sentenced to jail.
He said he had "renewed hope" in reforms that will improve
prison conditions while finding "alternative sentences to
prison".
The president spoke after a meeting with criminal justice
representatives, including Franco Corleone, who advocates for
prisoners' rights.
Later, Corleone said that Italian laws are outdated when
compared with other European jurisdiction in such areas as
length of trials.
As well, stiff laws involving illegal drugs have led to
prison overcrowding, said Corleone.
"The president seemed convinced of the need to intervene".
