Italian bishops call for end to political corruption


(ANSA) – Rome, September 28 – The Italian Bishops Conference
(CEI) called for an overhaul of Italy's political party system
on Friday after the latest wave of corruption scandals.
"It is a fact that there is a need for the revision of
political parties," said Monsignor Mariano Crociata, CEI
secretary-general. "It is a general issue that applies to all
political parties".
A wave of party-spending scandals have recently hit regions
across Italy, one of which forced Lazio Governor Renata
Polverini to quit earlier this week.
"It is the ongoing corruption and scandals that permeates
the political classes and generates hostility in citizens," CEI
said in a statement after a meeting that was held in Rome this
