Mixed reactions to possible second Monti term

(ANSA) - Rome, September 28 - There were mixed reactions on
Friday to the possibility of a second Mario Monti government
after Italy's unelected technocrat premier said he would serve
again ''under special circumstances''.
''A second Monti term is a possibility,'' said the
president of the Italian industrial employers' association,
Giorgio Squinzi.
''But above all Italy needs a solid, reliable government of
credible people which has a political basis''.
His opinion was shared by Pier Luigi Bersani, the leader of
the centre-left Democratic Party.
''Monti is a resource for the country,'' Bersani told daily
newspaper La Repubblica.
''But if he wants to continue without a political majority
supporting him, I say to him that it's not possible. This is the
basic point, everything else comes later''.
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne had no reservations though.
''(A second Monti government) would be a step forward for
the country. It would give credibility and eliminate much
uncertainty,'' he said.
Susanna Camusso, leader of Italy's largest trade union
confederation CGIL, expressed a opposite view, saying a second
Monti term ''would be a message of resignation, not a prospect
for change''.
''The sensation is that of a country that is unable to
create different political alternatives to overcome the
crisis,'' she said.
Antonio Di Pietro, the outspoken leader of the small
anti-graft IdV party that opposes Monti's emergency government,
had no hesitation in shooting down the hypothesis.
''In a democracy the idea that someone should want to
govern the country without asking for authorisation from its
citizens only exists in dictatorships or in countries where
citizens are considered second-rate,'' he said.
Monti took the helm of government last November when the
financial crisis forced Silvio Berlusconi to resign as premier.
His term as premier is set to end when Italy holds
elections next spring.
