(ANSA) - Rome, October 3 - Italy's first openly lesbian MP,
Paola Concia, filed a request in Rome's Civil Court Wednesday to
ask for her same-sex marriage contract to be legally recognized.
Concia, gay spokesperson for the centre-left Democratic
Party (PD), exchanged vows with Ricarda Trautmann, a German
criminologist, last August in Frankfurt.
Four other couples appealed to the Court for the same
reason.
Concia came out in 2002 after working for the PD for several
years.
She became an MP in 2008 and has become a prominent activist
for equal rights for gays and hate-crime laws against
gay-bashing.
"There is a legislative gap in Italy. We are out of time and
touch. Hopefully this will encourage parties to stand behind
legislation (in favor of gay marriage)".
