Pope calls for solidarity, generosity in economic crisis


(ANSA) - Loreto, October 4 - Pope Benedict XVI called
Thursday for solidarity and generosity in the face of the
ongoing economic crisis shaking much of the world.
Despite the hardships many families suffer, now is the time
for people to put aside their egos and think of others, the Pope
said while celebrating Mass in front of the Basilica della Santa
Casa in the Marche town of Loreto, which houses an important
Catholic shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
"In the current crisis, which affects not only the economy
but various sectors of society," people must put aside
selfishness and instead work in solidarity with troubled
families and the young, said the Pope.
He also urged Catholics to trust in the Virgin Mary to help
with "all of the difficulties of our world".
Before celebrating Mass, the Pope - who arrived by
helicopter - prayed in the Holy House of Nazareth, which
according to tradition is the house in which the Virgin Mary
It is said that in medieval times, when the sacred house
was threatened with destruction by the Turks, the house was
carried by angels through the air and eventually left in Loreto.
The Pope travelled to the Marian city to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the visit of Pope John XXIII, who made a
pilgrimage to Loreto in 1962 to pray for the success of the
Second Vatican Council.
