Florence S. Croce crucifix restored

(ANSA) – Florence, October 5 – A large wooden cross
representing Christ Crucified by the Master of Figline has been
returned to its former glory in a restoration lasting two years.
The crucifix, dating to around 1320, hangs over the main
altar in the basilica of S. Croce in Florence.
The wood support presented signs of insect infestation and
the painted surface was scratched and darkened with dirt.
The restoration began in 2009 and cost 163,000 euros,
funded by the foundation Friends of Florence.
The Master of Figline is a little-studied artist of
uncertain origins, though it seems he was active in Assisi and
Florence from c. 1310 to c. 1330, where some say he worked with
his more famous mediaeval colleague Giotto.
