Napolitano calls for 'moral revival' after scandals

(ANSA) - Rome, October 5 - President Giorgio Napolitano said
on Friday that Italy needed a "moral revival" after a series of
corruption scandals that have undermined the public's faith in
the country's political class.
Scandals have hit various parts of the political spectrum
in recent months.
At the moment ex-premier Silvio Berlisconi's People of
Freedom (PdL) party is in turmoil over the case of its former
caucus chief in Lazio, Franco Fiorito, who was arrested on
Tuesday on suspicion of embezzling public money.
The head of state said he hoped dialogue could produce "a
moral revival of the country that it needs today like few other
times since it rediscovered liberty (after Fascism)".
"The many phenomena of degradation and of sliding into
illegality, together with administrative and institutional
inefficiency, provoke a rejection of politics," he added.
He also condemned the vitriol that is frequently seen in
political debate in Italy.
"There should be no more sterile conflicts and reciprocal
delegitimizations that suffocate our country and our society,"
he said.
