(ANSA) - Rome, October 10 - An Italian national newswire
found it reported an average of six news items per day on the
abuse or mistreatment of girls or teenagers in Italy - though
hundreds were concentrated on a few, high profile cases.
The data emerged in a report delivered to the Italian
Premier Mario Monti's office on Wednesday called "Dossier on the
condition of Italian minors".
The report was put together by ANSA newswire and the
children's charity Terre des Hommes for the United Nations'
"International Day of the Girl Child" on October 11.
The report examined ANSA crime news over an 18-month period
- from January 2011 to June 2012.
There were 130,000 crime news pieces transmitted over the
period.
Of these, 3,196 were on girls or teenagers, although
hundreds of items were concentrated on just a few, high profile
cases.
The three crimes that spawned the largest number of new
items were Sarah Scazzi (914 items), Yara Gambirasio (413) and
Elisa Claps (304).
Scazzi was a 15-year-old found strangled in her southern
Italian home in August 2010.
Gambirasio, 13, vanished on her way home from gymnastics
practice in November 2010.
Her body was later found in a vacant lot 10 kilometers
away.
Claps was a 17-year-old who vanished 1993, but whose corpse
was discovered 17 years later in the attic of a church in
Potenza, in southern Italy.
In addition, there were 804 cases of online pedophilia or
sexual solicitation of female minors.
