Hazard inspections wrapping up at ILVA steelworks in Italy

(ANSA) - Rome, October 10 - An evironmental inspection into
the troubled ILVA steelworks will wrap up Thursday in the
southern Italian port city of Taranto, Environment Minister
Corrado Clini said Wednesday.
Once completed, the results of the hazard inspection will
be reviewed for one week before the environment ministry decides
on further action.
"A draft includes immediate measures to complete within
three years which will bring about drastic reductions in
polluting emissions," said Clini.
Managers at ILVA are trying to keep the plant open despite
previous orders to close departments due to health and
environmental violations.
The high-profile case has pitted environmental concerns due
to high cancer rates against a local need for jobs.
