Huge resort seized in Italian national park

(ANSA) - Foggia, October 10 - The president of the chamber
of commerce of the southern Italian coastal city of Foggia on
Wednesday was among those ensnared in an investigation into the
illegal expansion of a large tourist resort in a national park.
Authorities seized and shuttered the vast and new Il Porto
resort in the Gargano National Park near Foggia on Wednesday for
unauthorized construction and failure to adhere to the original
approved project.
Construction of the 24-million-euro resort - which extends
across 70,000 square meters - began in 2005, with full building
approvals, which included favorable assessments by Gargano park
management and cultural asset authorities.
However, the structure was transformed and expanded over
the years to such an extent that it destroyed a stretch of rocky
ridge and indigenous Mediterranean flora, defacing protected
terrain, according to investigators.
The president of Foggia's chamber of commerce, Eliseo
Zanasi, was the technical director of the company that carried
out the construction.
Five other people also face charges in the case, including
Francesco Paolo Moschella, the head of the Il Porto resort and
development project, and his brother Federico Erminio Moschella,
who oversaw construction.
