Italian police to investigate officers who hauled away child

(ANSA) - Cittadella, October 11 - Italy's national police
chief on Thursday told ANSA he had "profound regret" for the
case of a 10-year-old boy who officers hauled out of school
kicking and screaming over a bitter custody battle.
Antonio Manganelli launched an internal investigation
Thursday after a video of the emotional scene hit national
airwaves, sparking a furore among the boy's family members and
many in the public at large.
Footage of the scene showed two plain-clothes officers
forcibly picking up the boy named Leonardo, one by his shoulders
and the other by his ankles, and taking him away as he screamed
for his aunt who was filming.
A court had ordered that the boy be turned over to the
custody of his father.
Child-protection officers said they had repeatedly
attempted to pick up the boy at his mother's home but she and
her family would not hand him over.
"We will work with utmost rigor in the internal
investigation," he said.
