Italy's Telecom announces start of 4G era


(ANSA) – Milan, October 16 – Italian telecommunications
provider Telecom Italia announced on Tuesday the launch of 4G
services in four cities slated for November 7.
From that date mobile ultra-broadband Internet access will
be available to customers in Milan, Rome, Turin and Naples,
before being extended to a further 16 cities by the end of the
Telecom will initially use its 1800Mhz frequencies for 4G
services pending the release of those in the more sought-after
800Mhz band, with outdoor coverage of over 80%.
Indoor coverage will initially be less but "it is a
journey," said Telecom CEO Marco Patuano, suggesting that the
company's competitors may not be far behind.
