Brutal measures were taken to avoid catastrophe, Monti says


(ANSA) - Bologna, October 17 - To counter the crisis, his
government had to take "brutal measures," Italian Premier Mario
Monti said on Wednesday at a national mayors' assembly in
"We did not use a fine-tuned scalpel....we had to avoid
catastrophe," Monti told the National Association of Cities'
(ANCI) assembly referring to the measures taken by his
government to address the crisis.
Monti's administration brought in to replace the
government of Silvio Berlusconi amid a peak in the euro crisis
last November is a group of unelected technocrats, mostly with
economic and finance backgrounds.
