Rome's Circus Maximus may host Alpine Ski World Cup event

(ANSA) - Rome, October 18 - Rome's Circus Maximus may host
an event of the Alpine Ski World Cup, organizers announced
"There's no better place in the world to host the City
Event. I believe in this project," said Guenther Hujara, the
chief race director for the International Ski Federation's World
Cup and technical delegate to the Italian government.
Hujara was in Rome Thursday surveying the ancient Roman
chariot racetrack, which today is a grassy public park and
events venue.
The City Event is a stop on the Alpine Ski World Cup, whose
races are hosted primarily at ski resorts in the Alps.
If approved, the City Event at the Circus Maximus would
take place either in 2014 or 2015.
"Things are moving along with very positive indications
that the World Cup of Alpine Skiing will come to Rome, inside
the historic Circus Maximus," said a statement from the Italian
Winter Sports Federation.
Experts must first determine if the space could hold a ramp
60 meters wide and 250 meters long, capable of supporting 1,000
kilograms per square meter.
Rome's Mediterrean climate is not said to be a problem.
Snow would be produced and preserved in an airplane hangar
and transported to the site.
