Soccer: Catania demand rematch over ref errors in Juve game

Rome, October 29 - Catania Chairman Antonino
Pulvirenti on Monday called for his side's 1-0 home defeat to
Juventus to be replayed because the result was conditioned by
mistakes by match officials.
The Sicilian side had a goal wrongly disallowed in the
first half while Arturo Vidal's second-half winner for the Turin
visitors was awarded despite it being tainted by an offside in
the move that led to it.
Juve General Manager Beppe Marotta said the Serie A
champions, who are three points clear at the top of the table,
would have won anyway.
But Pulvirenti is less certain.
"Let's play the game again if they are sure they'll win,"
said Pulvirenti.
"I ask (Juve Chairman Andrea) Agnelli to replay the match".
Pulvirenti also blamed pressure from the Juve bench for the
first-half goal being disallowed and said that, if Juve do not
want to replay the game, they should ask to have it awarded to
He added that the players on the Juve bench should receive
"severe punishment".
Marotta admitted on Monday that the match officials had
made mistakes but said these were balanced out by decisions that
have gone against Juve in previous matches and rejected
suggestions the team's players had conditioned the result.
The furore touches on sensitive issues as Juve were
stripped of two Serie A titles and forced to spend a season in
the second tier for involvement in the 2006 Calciopoli
match-fixing scandal, which revolved around attempts to arrange
compliant referees for some sides' matches.
Other Serie A games were also affected by bad mistakes by
the officials last weekend too.
Fourth-placed Lazio were unlucky with decisions in their
2-0 defeat at Fiorentina. The Roman side, who had two players
sent off in the closing stages, had a Stefano Mauri goal wrongly
disallowed and were not given a penalty for handball.
The late Antonio Di Natale spot-kick that enabled Udinese
to claim a 3-2 from-behind win at AS Roma, meanwhile, was
generously given after Roberto Pererya went down following the
slightest of contacts.
