Reggio Calabria's former city government appeals ejection


Reggio Calabria, November 5 - The former city
administration of Reggio Calabria said Monday it is appealing to
the Regional Administrative Court (TAR) after it was sacked over
allegations of mafia ties.
One month ago, the Italian government dissolved the local
government in Reggio Calabria for mafia connections.
Interior Minister Annamaria Cancellieri said then that it
was the first time in Italian history that the city council of a
provincial capital was dissolved.
The members of the former council - including former mayor
Demetrio Arena - say they have consulted parliamentarians and
all agree that the action was unfair.
Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL)
party has been especially supportive, he added.
"I have to say thanks to the PdL," said Arena. "The party
has been very attentive to what is happening in Reggio and has
put in place a strong institutional commitment to dialogue".
The PdL itself has been plagued with scandal in recent
Reggio Calabria is the biggest city in Italy's southern
Calabria region.
The Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta is now the most powerful
mafia in Italy, thanks to its hold on the European cocaine
