Italy leads Europe in organic food industry, report says

Rimini, November 7 - When it comes to the organic
foods industry, Italy takes top spot in Europe, according to a
new report published Wednesday.
According to the report, by the Foundation for Sustainable
Development (Fondazione per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile) in
partnership with Italian research institute Enea, Italy has some
48,509 organic producers along the entire supply chain, more
than any other European country.
According to the report's findings, presented at a
conference on the 'green economy' in Rimini, 'Italian
agriculture has managed to orient production choices towards
quality as characterized by strong ties to the single entities
operating on the territory, so following a path along the road
to sustainability'.
In numerical terms, Italy hosts some 243 food products
characterized by the DOP, IGP and STG origin-guarantee labels as
well as 4,600 regional specialties and 521 wines which also
qualify for the DOC, DOCG and IGT origin-guarantee labels.
In terms of land under organic cultivation, Italy has some
1.1 million hectares, almost 20% of total agricultural land use,
coming second only to Spain in Europe.
