UDC leader Casini says Europe must learn from Obama's win

Rome, November 7 - Pier Ferdinando Casini, the
leader of Italy's centrist Catholic UDC party, said Wednesday
that Europe should learn from United States President Barack
Obama's election victory and not abandon the weaker sections of
society as it seeks to overcome the eurozone crisis.
"The overwhelming majority of Europeans cheered for Obama
in order to continue the close relationship between the United
States and Europe and overcome the crisis with (financial) rigor
without forgetting social fairness and solidarity," Casini said.
"That is the sense of supporting Obama for us. You cannot
fail to combine rigour with the defence of the weakest citizens.
"This is an issue that we should face too".
Casini's party is one of the three main political groups
supporting Premier Mario Monti's emergency government in
parliament although it is considerably smaller than the other
two - the centre-left Democratic Party and ex-premier Silvio
Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom (PdL) party.
