'Italy should follow U.S. example' says Vatican's Bertone


Vatican City, November 8 - Italian citizens should
emulate their American counterparts by turning out
"enthusiastically" in mass for next April's general election,
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said
Amid widespread disaffection with politics in Italy, the
Vatican No.2 said the vote that confirmed Barack Obama as
president was "a lesson in mass and enthusiastic participation
in this act of democracy".
"I hope this happens in other countries like Italy, that
people do not flee their responsibilities (as voters), that they
are aware of those responsibilities as citizens," Bertone said.
