Economist, politician luciano barca dies

Rome, November 8 - Economist, politician, writer
and journalist Luciano Barca died late Wednesday at the age of
91.
The ex-partsian, father of the current minister for
territorial cohesion, Fabrizio Barca, seved as a naval officer
during the Second World War and distinguished himself during
action with the submarine Ambra.
With a degree in law from Rome's La Sapienza University and
a final dissertation in political economy, he joined the
Resistance in 1944 before becoming a member of the Italian
Communist Party (PCI) the following year.
In 1946 he began a career as a journalist with the party
newspaper L'Unita', remaining there for 11 years.
Barca played a key role within the PCI for many decades,
serving alongside the likes of leaders Palmiro Togliatti, Luigi
Longo and Enrico Berlinguer.
He also represented the party for multiple mandates in
parliament.
He was a prolific writer and published numerous important
works on politics and economics.
There will be a farewell ceremony for Barca at Rome's
Verano cemetery on November 9 at 11:00 local time.
