Strasbourg, November 9 - The Council of Europe
issued a statement on Friday welcoming Italy's new
anti-corruption law that passed October 31, saying that
"fighting corruption is a key priority of the Council".
Secretary-General Thorbjorn Jagland said in a statement
that the step by Italy "is important to uphold Council of Europe
values".
Italy must send a report to the Council by November 30
demonstrating actions taken to support anti-corruption in the
country.
The long-awaited Italian law provides for an
anti-corruption authority to be set up in the public
administration to oversee the provisions and to monitor for such
things as nepotism and cronyism within public offices.
